Hi Gregor, should I put my hard earned cash into Google Pay Per click or invest it in SEO?

The choice really depends on the competition. Some SEO areas are very crowded (such as insurance, loans, holiday homes etc) with the competition spending hundreds of thousands of pounds on their SEO. If you’re not willing to spend that much then go for PPC.

But be aware that as soon as you stop spending money on PPC then the traffic will dry up.
If, however you’re in a less competitive market or could optimise for a longer-tail phrase (such as “holiday homes in Skye”) then you could get a much better return on your investment by going down the SEO path.

Hello Davina,

There are hundreds of things you can do but the simple fact is that SEO comes down to two things:

1 – You have to have the right words in the right places on your website

2 – You have to have a reasonable number of good quality links pointing to your website.

Hi, I have a website that has been live for some time and is really good - I have a #1 ranking for a keyword but it doesn’t send any traffic! Can you give me an explanation or any advice please?

Hello,

Rankings are nice to have but if they don’t send any traffic then they’re a complete waste of time. You can rank at #1 for a bizarre search term such as ‘Bakery accountants in south west India” but nobody searches for that. You want to rank for sensible related terms.

If you’re an accountant in Slough then you want to rank for the term ‘Accountants in Slough’.

My web developer has said I should pay him to buy some links. Should I buy links? I’ve heard that you can buy 10,000 links and surely that must be good for my SEO?

Hi,

Google says No. If you’re caught buying links then they can remove you from the index or push you down the index.

However, in reality many people buy links to try to get their website to move up the rankings. I tend not to buy links. I did it a few times in the distant past but it wasn’t really that beneficial. Much better to have a website or a blog that people are willing to link to without you having to pay anyone.

Hello Gregor, I am constantly getting reciprocal link requests asking me to link to them and they’ll link to me. Are they OK and should I do this? Peter

Hello Peter,

They can be. If you have 100 links pointing to your website and you’re also pointing back to those same 100 sites then that just looks dodgy and Google will treat you as a dodgy website. But it’s quite natural for websites to link to each other if they both feel that they have useful content.

So if a percentage of your links are reciprocal then that’s OK. If they’re from related websites that are in a similar sector to you then that’s even better.

My best friend outsources her SEO and everything from overseas. Can I outsource my SEO? It’s much cheaper in India and China than in the UK.

Yes, and if you’re like me you’ll get a few emails and phone calls each day offering that service. But I would be very very careful.

If you outsource to someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing or are overly aggressive then Google can punish you in some way. If you want to outrsource then keep an eye on what SEO they are doing and get a report of what they’ve done and what they plan to do. If anything seems a bit dodgy then don’t let them do it.
